​Learning Designed for All! Universal Design for Learning

Dates: October 23 & 24, 2017 (Attend one or both days)
Day 1 Cost: $15 for Oakland County educators; out-of-county educators must register on the UDL-IRN site.
Day 2 Cost: $175 for all participants

Description: Join the UDL-IRN, Macomb Intermediate School District, Oakland Schools ISD, and Muskegon ISD as they host a unique, informative, “UDL”ized learning event in the Great Lakes Regions. As the first of several regional events, this one promises to be engaging, enlightening and one of a kind! The Great Lakes Regional event is the same high energy experience you have come to expect from the UDL-IRN only with that unique “D”troit Flare!

UDL Foundations

Cost: $15 for Oakland County educators; $65 for out-of-county educators*

Description: Oakland Schools is proud to continue growing the OS PLN4UDL virtual ecosystem with the Universal Design for Learning Foundations event. It is an intense, comprehensive immersion into the principles and philosophy of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is a powerful framework based on neuroscience and learning design that empowers learners with agency, designs for the variability found in all classrooms, and addresses the needs of accessible curriculum.

Join Oakland county educators as they lay out the foundations of UDL and how it not only supports but enhances instructional design, formative assessment, new ESSA guidelines, and technology integration.

In this event participants will:


  • Learn the fundamental pieces that comprise Universal Design for Learning and its implications for redesigning educational environments

  • 
Explore UDL as an instructional design framework

  • 
Explore UDL's connections to ESSA, the National Tech Plan, and specialty programs


  • Explore UDL as it pertains to reframing least restrictive environmentsLearn UDL's framework as it addresses equity for all students and Culturally Relevant Training.

*Due to funding guidelines; 27 seats are available for Oakland County Public School and PSA Educators and 3 seats are available for private schools, agencies and out of county educators at $65.00 per seat.

​UDL Design Lab

Description: After attending a UDL Foundations workshop, UDL Design Lab is the next step in your UDL journey. It's a place to think through UDL principles and how they can be put into practice in your unique setting. UDL Lab is a place to build a toolbox to enhance your classroom, school, district. The lab is an "unconference": the setting is open, the learning goals are set by attendees, and there is time and space to think and collaborate with colleagues across the county, District UDL Practitioners will be on site to consult and help build with you. Lunch will be provided.

UDL Academy

Description: After attending a UDL Foundations workshop and UDL Design Lab join the PLN4UDL in the next step in UDL Implementation. The UDL Academy is designed for UDL practitioners who want to implement UDL in their classrooms, get some more UDL tools and ideas, "edu-hack" their current resources to make them more UDL, or build their own UDL professional learning experiences for their home PLCs/schools/districts. In the Academy participants will interact with national and local leaders as they delve deeper into the framework of UDL, explore the connection between UDL and other initiatives such as Maker Ed, Cultures of Thinking, and Social Emotional Learning outcomes. Participants will also explore the presence of UDL in many state and federal policies. Finally, participants will create implementation plans on scaling up UDL in their own practice, building, or district. UDL Academy is a hybrid offering with a one day face to face component and an online learning and collaboration space developed in mi PLACE.
