Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

Oakland Schools supports local districts in implementing multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).  The goal of an MTSS framework is to ensure high levels of engagement and achievement for all students through the use of a coordinated, collaborative, data-driven school-wide system.  Integrated, evidence-based instruction and intervention is delivered to students in varying intensities (tiers) based on individual needs and response to instruction so that each student is successful in meeting grade-level academic and behavioral expectations.

Based on the current evidence base for MTSS and past work with Oakland County schools, Oakland Schools has developed presentations, resources, and tools to assist schools who may be exploring or implementing MTSS. Prior to beginning to implement an MTSS framework, schools are advised to spend time exploring the big ideas of this school-wide model.  Schools who commit to an MTSS framework undergo three distinct phases of implementation: Consensus, Infrastructure and Initial Implementation, and Sustained Implementation.
