Teacher of the Year

Teacher of the Year 2016Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards

The Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards are presented annually to honor and reward Oakland County teachers who have achieved, through their effort and example, the highest standards of excellence in their profession. Oakland Schools created these awards out of a conviction that a quality public education system is essential to the health and vitality of our community. We believe that encouraging excellence in education is the shared responsibility of all who reap its benefits.

The Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year award program began in 1987. Throughout this time, various organizations have sponsored this program including Newsweek, WDIV, The Detroit Free Press, Comerica, Health Alliance Plan, the Oakland County Credit Union, and the Oakland Schools Education Foundation.

Eligibility:

  • Nominees must be certified, full-time teachers in grades Kindergarten through twelve, who are employed in a public school in Oakland County.

  • Nominees must have a minimum of five (5) full years of classroom teaching experience.

Nomination process:

  • Districts will determine their participation and name a district coordinator in December 2015.

  • Nomination forms are submitted to the district coordinator of the district in which the teacher is employed.

  • Each district determines its own review and selection process to select the three teachers (one elementary, one middle/junior high, and one high school) to be considered for the Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.

  • All nomination forms (up to three per participating district) will be due to Oakland Schools on Friday, February 10, 2017.

Selection process:

  • All eligible nominations are reviewed and screened by a committee comprised of representatives from Oakland Schools, education referent groups, parent groups, and the community.
  • There are nine judges on the committee (three judges for each category).

  • Judges score each nominee and award points based on application content, as well as testimonials from colleagues, parents and students. In each category, the nominee receiving the most total points is the winner.

Awards:

  • In late March or early April 2016, the Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award program coordinators visit the schools of the winning teachers to make a surprise announcement.

  • All nominees and their guests are invited to a special program at Oakland Schools (2111 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford) on Thursday, May 4, 2017 to be recognized for their achievement.

  • The three winners each receive $2,000 from the Oakland Schools Education Foundation at this event.
